Chasing Ice Discussion Questions

For the most part, I agreed with the message and content of the film, “Chasing Ice”. There was only one point that I had trouble accepting. In the film, when they mentioned people did not believe in climate change, I was intrigued by the opposing view and wanted to understand why they thought that way. I did not understand why people could doubt global warming when a strong study on the Yukon glaciers highly suggested it was real. A group of scientists watched the Yukon glaciers from 1958-2008 and noticed that there were over 1200 glaciers when beginning their observations. Within 50 years “4 of glaciers actually grew in size, 300 of them disappeared and the rest decreased in size.” (------------------). Within this content, there are certain topics that relate to the film “Chasing Ice” such as, the impacts of global warming and the annual global temperature rise. The content suggests, that although no one can exactly forecast the exact effects on the increased temperature, “some experts have predicted severe droughts and a rise in ocean leaves of 0.6 meters (2 feet) to 6 meters (20 feet)- conditions that will affect everyone on Earth” (Hales, & Lauzon, 2018). James Balog has also agreed with this, predicting that in his “daughter's lifetimes sea levels will increase between 1.5-3 feet” (----------). The concept also distributes more information on the annual temperature increase. James Balog hypothesizes that this temperature increase is one of the major factors in glacier recession. In the textbook, it outlines the temperature from 1950-2015 in a graph. This graph shows a constant increase in temperature almost every year and ends in 2015, where the new record of +0.87 degrees Celsius from the earth’s normal temperature lies.
