What does the word ‘friendship’ mean to you?In the book Charlotte’s Web, there is a pig named Wilbur, who was born a runt. There is also a rat named Templeton, who is rude, mean, disgusting. Templeton only cares and looks out for himself. Templeton didn’t know how to be a friend when Wilbur asked Templeton to play, Templeton didn’t want to save Wilbur, Templeton didn’t want to save Charlotte’s children. In the book Charlotte’s Web, Wilbur was sad and crying and Templeton ignores him. Templeton told Wilbur he did not want to play. For example, “ ‘Will you play with me, Templeton?’ asked Wilbur. ‘Play?’ asked Templeton, twirling his whiskers. ‘Play? I hardly know the meaning of the word.’ ‘Well,’ said Wilbur, ‘it means to have fun, to frolic, to run and skip and make merry.”(White 29).This is important because Templeton did not know the definition of play. Wilbur needs Templeton to save Charlotte’s egg sac. Templeton replies,” ‘Can’t a rat catch a wink of sleep without being rudely popped into the air?’ ‘Listen to me!’ cried Wilbur. ‘Charlotte is very ill… Therefore it is absolutely necessary that I take her egg sac with me..’..’So it’s old Templeton to rescue again, is it?’(White 166-167). Upon reflection, Templeton starts to rant on how he saves everyone and how nobody does anything for him. Wilbur wanted Templeton’s help but, Templeton did not want to help Wilbur remember that Templeton only cared for one thing only. Evidence of this, “ Wilbur was desperate. The people were coming, and the rat was failing him. Suddenly he remembered Templeton’s fondness for food…’I will make you a solemn promise. Get Charlotte’s egg sac and from now on I will let you eat first..’”(White 168). This evidence confirms, that Templeton only cared to do things when food is involved.
