At first, when Charlotte first came on the ship, she was a proper young lady. She tried her best to not associate with the crew because they were below her, and she became instantly close with the Captain because he was a gentleman.
When the captain started to beat Zachariah, Charlotte stood up for him even though she was the one who told him about the mutiny in the first place. She told him about the mutiny because she thought it would be the proper and right thing to do. As a young woman trained to behave accordingly, it was the clear option.She was certain that it was her fault Zachariah had died. Charlotte went down and talked to one of the crew, making up her mind that she wanted to join them to make up for Zachariah's death. She was a proper lady, following all the rules, looking up to the Captain, like expected. She only turned against him when she saw how truly cruel he was. After she saw Jaggery not only kill Cranick, and toss him overboard like a dead rat, she witnessed him kill her closest friend on the voyage. So she joined the crew, and she stayed with them, adapting to their lifestyle, picking up their habits. Charlotte, upon returning home for only a few days, decided that living in near-isolation had driven her to the maximum of her sanity, so away she went, out the window, to join her real family on the seas. Charlotte’s definitely not perfect, but she fights for what she believes in in her own way. She learns quickly, never quits, and is only a thirteen year old girl. I think everyone could could learn a lot from the little we know about Charlotte
