Charlie's whole life he felt left out. The theme I choose for this text was accepted. I included this because it shows how his life choices were based on not being accepted. This was the reason Charlie desired the surgery. Charlie really wanted many thing but it all comes down to acceptance. Charlie found it necessary for world to finally to accept him, so he requested to get intelligent. The factories workers didn’t accept him because he was dumb, but then even after the surgery he still was not approved by them. Charlie wouldn’t accept the fact that he wasn't smart. Charlie doesn’t acquire the proof that Joe and Frank are not his friends. Charile even doesn’t accept being beaten by Algernon. He would try over and over, again and again until he got what he wanted. …show more content…
Later in the story Charlie states that Algernon was his friend. This is important in the story because it shows how he first felt excepted. Another theme I chose for the story was encouragement. I included this theme because it affects Charlies decisions in the text. Charlie was given a lot of encouragement, especially from the doctors and Miss Kinnian. Miss Kinnian praised him while learning saying he was learning fast. She also said when he thought he wasn’t smart that she had “confidence” in him. When he was finished racing Algernon, Dr. Strauss told him he had “good motivation”. Also in states on pg. 367 that “Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss we're proud of us.” I included this theme because it affects Charlies decisions in the text. This is important in the text because it shows that Charlie was able to accomplish many thing with

Charlie went from being “retarded” from the beginning to some kind of genius throughout most of the book. The change wasn't instant, it took a little bit of time but the change was drastic. On page 1 Charlie couldn’t spell progress, then a while after the surgery, on around page 50, he spelled every single word correctly. To begin with, a couple of weeks after Charlie, a 32-year-old man with an I.Q. of 68, has an operation to make him “smart”, he doesn't see any progress in his intelligence. After work one day, Frank and Joe, Two employees at Donner’s Bakery who often pick on Charlie, take Charlie to a bar, where they urge him to dance like a buffoon and then abandon him, but charlie is unaware of that and thinks they're all having a good time. “Everyone laffed and we had a good time and they gave me lots of drinks and Joe said Charlie is a card when hes potted” (190). Happy Risks Authors use genres and characters to develop a theme. Sometimes different main characters can be used to build the same theme. In the poem, “the lesson of the moth,” poet Don Marquis uses the main character, a moth, to teach the narrator Archy, a cockroach, what it is like to have a dream worth dying for. Similarly, Daniel Keyes, author of “Flowers for Algernon,” uses the protagonist Charlie Gordon, a mentally challenged person, who longs to be more intelligent, to develop the idea that good things are worth dying for. Both the poet and the author use the main characters in their literary work to contribute to the idea that the chance for great happiness is worth taking great risks.…
