Charlie's Life In Daniel Keys Flowers For Algernon

I once dreamed of a life I didn't think I could have, just like Charlie did in the story “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keys, he wanted to be smart but didn’t think it was possible. Sometimes I think about what my life would be like if I was living that imaginary life. Would I want to be living that life, would I not, what if it came with a cost, would I still want to live it? I’m sure Charlie would have thought about these things if he was smart enough to do so. That's why I strongly believe Charlie was right to have the operation. In the story “Flowers for Algernon” Charlie is a 32 year old man who has the intelligence level of a 1st grader, he wants to become smarter so 2 doctors Dr.Nemur and Dr.Strauss enroll him in a trial to triple …show more content…
Charlie always believed that Frank Reilly, and Joe Carp were his friend even though they said horrible things to him like, “look where Charlie had his operashun what did they do put some brains in,”(204) and “What did you do forget your key and open your door the hard way.”(204) Later on in the story charlie finds out that they were actually teasing him, and making fun of him all along, “Now I know what it means when they say ‘to pull a Charlie Gordon.’ I’m ashamed.”(209) After Charlie figures this out he makes sure nobody else has to get teased like he did, when Charlie goes to a restaurant people are making fun of a dishwasher because he dropped a plate and it broke, Charlie thinks this boy is mentally retarded, similar to what Charlie was like at the beginning of the story, so Charlie decides to stand up for this boy and says “Shut up! Leave him alone! It's not his fault he can't understand! He can't help what he is! But for god's sake… He’s still a human being.”(215) This quote shows how great of a person Charlie is and how he will stand up for people and not let anybody go through what he had to go through with being made fun of and not even realizing

To begin with, a couple of weeks after Charlie, a 32-year-old man with an I.Q. of 68, has an operation to make him “smart”, he doesn't see any progress in his intelligence. After work one day, Frank and Joe, Two employees at Donner’s Bakery who often pick on Charlie, take Charlie to a bar, where they urge him to dance like a buffoon and then abandon him, but charlie is unaware of that and thinks they're all having a good time. “Everyone laffed and we had a good time and they gave me lots of drinks and Joe said Charlie is a card when hes potted” (190).
