John Cheever in his short story “Reunion” shows the re-encounter between father and son in New York City after three years. On the other hand, Tobias Wolff in his short story “Powder” illustrate a father and son having a day together after skiing. While both stories “Reunion” and “Powder” reflect a common point of view and similar characters, the stories show a different father and son relationship. On the story “Reunion”, the central characters are the son, Charlie, and the father, not named on the story. Moreover, Charlie, is a flat character because his personality traits and characteristics does not change throughout the story. This is because throughout the story, the father appear to change constantly during the development of the story. For example, at the beginning of the story the father seems to have a moderate temperament, conversely, the father change his behavior and become more impulsive. Another essential character of the story is the mother. The mother of the major character, the son, is presented at the beginning of the story. The mother represent a minor, stock character, but the mother plays a big role on the events that occurs throughout the story. Firstly, the son appear to have a poor relationship with his father. In the same way, the son have a feeling of distrust towards his father. This can be observe when the son says “I felt snow brush along the floorboards under my feet. To keep my hands from shaking I clamped them between my knees (Wolff 20).” This example implies the feeling of distrust for the reason that the son is shaking is because he is not confidence that his father can drive back home with the road full of snow.
