The short story, Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes is about a 37 year old man who has a low cognitive learning disorder. Charlie Gordon is a 37 year old man with a low cognitive learning disorder. Charlie worked at a plastic box factory with his so called “friends”. Charlie underwent several tests such as the inkblot test and the maze race against Algernon the mouse. Ms. Kinnian referred Charlie to some doctors who did tests on him. They showed him inkblot, which is a piece of paper with ink all over it making up a picture for some people. Charlie saw nothing but ink. Charlie then met a mouse named Algernon. Algernon was a mouse that went through the procedure to be “smart”. Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur made Charlie race up against Algernon in a maze race. He lost several times in a row. Charlie is the main character in Flowers for Algernon. He has low cognitive learning disorder which means he takes more time to process or learn things. Charlie gets bullied by his and doesn't even realise it. He wants to be “normal” like everyone else. Charlie thinks that by being smart he will get more friends. In the story Charlie Gordon is taking these tests to see if he is a potential test subject. He is trying to get picked for a surgery that will help him be “smarter”. After all the test, Dr, Strauss and Dr. Nemur decide to use Charlie. Once the surgery has been completed they do another test. Charlie loses and gets mad. He becomes smarter after a few hours and or days. Charlie does a presentation and finds Algernon dead. He is so heartbroken that he lost his “bestfriend”. After Algernon dies charlie starts doing research and finds out that he will probably die the same way as Algernon. It is then that he writes his goodbye letter to everyone and leaves New
