Charlie Gordon's Personality In Daniel Keyes Flowers For Algernon

In the story “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keyes the main character Charlie Gordon’s intelligence and personality were affected dramatically by an operation. Before the operation, Charlie was extremely sociable and had many friends but, now he Doesn't have any friends due to the fact that he is Extremely intelligent his vocabulary is way above the average. Charlie’s intelligence also increased due to the fact that he can now do so many things he couldn’t do before and, he can now understand memorize things. Charlie’s personality also changed, due to the fact that before the operation during the night out with his friends Charlie stated, “Everybody laughed and we had a good time and they gave me lots of drinks and Joe said Charlie is a card when potted.” But, after the operation, Charlie gloomingly stated, “people don’t talk to me much anymore or kid around the way they used to. Before the surgery, Charlie wasn't intelligent at all and had only an IQ of 68. But after the surgery occurred Charlie’s IQ rapidly grew and he became extremely intelligent. Before having a surgery Charlie stated, “Joe Carp said I shoud show the girls how I mop out the toilet in the factory.” But after his surgery Charlie Expressed, “I didn’t know what to do or where to turn. Everyone was looking at me and laughing and I felt naked. I wanted to hide myself.” In the first quote it shows that Charlie couldn’t understand what his friends were saying about him and that they were even making fun of him since his intelligence was so low. But, in the second quote which occurred after the surgery Charlie was able to recognize that his friends were teasing him all this time which led him feeling miserable and depressed.
