Charlie was more gleeful at the beginning of "Flowers for Algernon." He had friends at the beginning of the story, Frank Reilly, and Joe Carp. Charlie had considered them as his friends, but later finds out that they weren't actually his friends, they just wanted to be around him so they could make fun of him. After he made this realization, he became forlorn. Before the operation, he was happier and he had friends. The didn't know they made fun of him, but he at least he was happy. Before Charlie had the surgery, he had a job at Donnegan's Plastic Box Company. But, when Charlie got smarter, it frightened other people. Most of the people at the factory signed a petition for Charlie to leave. Then Mr. Donnegan fired him. When he did have a job, he was happier and didn't feel so alone. When Charlie was given a lab, called "The Algernon-Gordon Effect," he found out the surgery was temporary. He became miserable and irritable. If he hadn't gotten the surgery, it would have saved him from pain in the long-run. Charlie wouldn't let anyone see him after he found out the surgery was temporary. He wouldn't even let Ms. Kinnian and Dr. Strauss see him. If he hadn't gotten the surgery, he wouldn't have to be in a situation like this.
