Charlie was more gleeful at the beginning of "Flowers for Algernon." He had friends at the beginning of the story, Frank Reilly, and Joe Carp. Charlie had considered them as his friends, but later finds out that they weren't actually his friends, they just wanted to be around him so they could make fun of him. After he made this realization, he became forlorn. Before the operation, he was happier and he had friends. The didn't know they made fun of him, but he at least he was happy. Before Charlie had the surgery, he had a job at Donnegan's Plastic Box Company. But, when Charlie got smarter, it frightened other people. Most of the people at the factory signed a petition for Charlie to leave. Then Mr. Donnegan fired him. When he did have a job, he was happier and didn't feel so alone. Charlie was a much happier person at the beginning of the story when he didn't have the operation done on him.

If he hadn't gotten the surgery, it would have saved him from pain in the long-run. Charlie wouldn't let anyone see him after he found out the surgery was temporary. He wouldn't even let Ms. Kinnian and Dr. Strauss see him. If he hadn't gotten the surgery, he wouldn't have to be in a situation like this. Charlie went from being “retarded” from the beginning to some kind of genius throughout most of the book. The change wasn't instant, it took a little bit of time but the change was drastic. On page 1 Charlie couldn’t spell progress, then a while after the surgery, on around page 50, he spelled every single word correctly. Charlie developed emotions he's never felt before, he never had any drive towards women in a loving way, he also didn’t feel much anger or hate towards anyone. I think that Charlie will still have somewhat of a memory of what happened.…

One of the reasons why he shouldn’t have had the operation is because later on, he ended up going back to where he was or maybe even worse than he was before the operation. Before the operation, he didn’t know how to use spelling or punctuation correctly. For example, “Dr. Strauss says I shud rite down what I think that happins to me from now on.” (Keyes, 53) He also had trouble even noticing what certain pictures were that others could see clearly what the…

Having the operation gave him a sense of belonging and having a real relationship with Miss Kinnian or Alice as they became close together and began to fall in love. However it is also a bad thing for this surgery because it hurts the people around Charlie. Dr. Strauss and Professor Nemur began to feel the effects of the surgery with his I.Q surpassing the 200’s. With such high intelligence levels and such low social skills the people around him began to feel sad and small compared to him. A scene in Flower for Algernon shows Charlie yelling at Professor Nemur forcing him to accept the Charlie is smarting than him.…
