We all know that special person in life that isn’t to bright but you know that they can change this world for the better. Charlie Gordon, a man with low intelligence and high motivation, had the power to change society. If life handed you the opportunity to become three times smarter than your current I.Q., making you more intelligent than many of the geniuses in the world, would you take that grand leap? Well, brave 37-year-old, Charlie Gordon took the chance and this giant step towards a new life changed him completely. In the story, “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keyes, Charlie Gordon’s values change and shape for the better, as his experiences develop in the story, making him see the world through a new perspective.

According to Progress Report July 28, Charlie states, “Thats why Im going away from New York for good. I dont want to do nothing like that agen. I dont want Miss Kinnian to feel sorry for me. Evry body feels sorry at the factery and I dont want that eather so Im going someplace where nobody knows that Charlie Gordon was once a genus and now he cant even reed a book or rite good.” This shows that Charlie feels like everyone around him thinks that he can not take care of himself. One can assume from Charlie’s beliefs that he feels like he can prove them wrong and show them that he doesn’t need to depend on others to be successful in life. In addition to the quote above, stated in Progress Report July 28, Charlie writes, “Ill practise hard and maybe I wont forget every thing I lerned. If I try reel hard maybe Ill be a littel bit smarter then I was before the operashun.” This quote explains that Charlie can take care of himself and will try hard to be successful on his own, without depending on others like he did at the beginning of the story. One can assume from this that Charlie has grown to be a more independent person and therefore is ready for the journey
