What would it be like to be mentally disabled, everyone taking advantage of one’s low intellect. But what if that mentally disabled person could be smart, insanely smart, even if for a month or two, would it be worth it? Most would dive in without a second glance but in Flowers for Algernon, not everything is as it seams. Charlie Gordon, the main character is a loving guy with friends that love to laugh. He works as a janitor for a local company but sadly, he is mentally disabled and can barely read or write. Even with these barriers he tries so hard to learn and become even little bit more wise. During every week he visits a hospital to try and gain at least a little knowledge from his teacher Mrs. Kinnamon. Through that night school, Charlie is selected for a surgery to try and increase his IQ just as another mouse, named Algernon has. As weeks past by, Charlie is increasing his intelligence like a sponge gaining water. Eventually he surpases his peers realizing that his perfect life isn’t what it seems. Instead of his friends laughing with him, its at him. Then Algernon dies. This is a deadly sign to Charlie because …show more content…
As stated by Charlie, “This intellegaints has driven a wedge between me and all the people I knew and loved. Before they laughed at me and despised me for my ignorance and dullness; now, they hate me for my knowledge and understanding. What in Gods name do they want of me?”(April 30). As stated before, Charlie is feeling alone and wondering what he could have done wrong. He believed that there was hope,a hope for friendship; if he could just have what others have, intellect. Now that he has it, he realizes that some people become distraught when others they thought were below them achieve greater than they ever could imagine and pose a threat to their job.
