Trimble Ethics are not rules, nor pre-determined decisions. Ethics are the feelings people get when they are facing conflict. Ethics are the human’s moral compass. Ethics make people think and act the way they do. Ethics are an important way of thinking in the medical field. An ethical issue arose in the case of Charlie Gordon. Charlie Gordon is a 37 year-old, but he is not average. In fact, he is way below average with an IQ of 68. Charlie was offered to undergo a procedure to increase his intelligence. When Charlie agreed, the doctors did not act ethically when they performed the procedure.
“Has the patient been informed of benefits and risks, understood this information, and given consent?” (Siegler). Charlie, when asked to do this operation was clearly not informed of the possible effects of the procedure, due to the fact that he was unaware of the possibility of his brain deteriorating. The story states, “…other animals who were used in this experiment are showing strange behavior,” (77, Flowers for Algernon). The previous information shows that the doctors did know of possible risks and failed to tell Charlie. As psychologists, Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss study human nature and habits. This means they would be able to investigate the possible reactions to people around Charlie after the investigation. They clearly did not do this, due to the fact that Charlie was fired from his job. They also began to become jealous of his intelligence, which caused them to reject him and begin the idea of "therapeutic nihilism," (Lasagna), which is deciding there is no cure to disease.
