The paintings are based on what his employers ask him to represent. His first project started two weeks before Cesar Chavez Day in 2014. He was asked to collaborate with other artists on a sketch of the Salinas fields and of course, a painting of Cesar Chavez next to it. It was a great learning experience for Cortes, working together with other local artists who had similar interests and values. Everyone's different style of painting was welcome on the collaboration.
Once the sketch was completed, all they needed for the final project were the right colors to represent the beauty of Salinas. Cortes explained, “It was exciting to see abstract art, surrealism, conceptual art, and photorealism all collaged into a minimalist setting. We included only what was necessary while attempting something brand new for all of us.” After showing me a picture of the finished painting, I was impressed to see that the panoramic background view of the Salinas fields were just as detailed as the slightly transparent head and shoulders of a smiling Cesar
