The characters in both literary works have different personalities that represent something, and because the characters had these tragic flaws, very unfortunate things happened to them throughout the stories. One example of this is the same greedy and selfish personality shown in both Friar Lawrence and Veruca Salt. “In one respect I’ll thy assist be; For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households’ rancor to pure love.” is what Friar Lawrence said to Romeo in Act 2, Scene 4 in Romeo and Juliet when he was agreeing to marry the two. He was being greedy and only thinking about how this would help himself and the church. In like manner, Violet Beauregarde’s mother was very angry and worried for her daughter after she swelled up like a blueberry; which you can see when she says “But I can’t have a blueberry as a daughter. How is she supposed to compete?!” Not to mention Lady Montague going as far as dying after news came to her that her son had been exiled from Verona. In Act 5, Scene 3, Montague said “Alas, my liege, my wife is dead tonight!
