Charlestown: A Short Story

Jeb did as he was told and secured a room in the hotel. He made sure to get one near the back and on the top floor so they would be as far from the prying eyes and ears of the more popular rooms as they could get. He wasn’t sure what it was that Ben was going to find out from this Darcy character, but he was sure that whatever it was they shouldn’t probably be talking about it where others may get an earshot of it. Once he had brought the saddlebags up in to the room and secured the horses around near the back of the building where they could be easily kept and ye on overnight he laid down on the mattress and looked up at the ceiling. The warm breeze coming in from the open window was enough the relax away the tension that he was feeling. …show more content…
“close the door, oh and Mel...Tell whoever it was that Randy sent up with you to keep an eye on me that I am more than capable of taking care of myself and that he should remember that, as well as the incident in Charlestown. Make sure you say that exactly, the incident in Charlestown.” The whore nodded in acknowledgment and then left the room and close the door behind her.

“I take it then that you are Darcy.” Ben asked.

“And that puts me at a significant disadvantage to you Mr.?”

“Hollingsworth, Ben Hollingsworth. I came here to see you because indeed answers about...” he as cut off by her raising her hand to him.

“I want to say that I am very saddened to hear about the fate of Fisk. He was a good man and I enjoyed his company.” Darcy said.

“His company?” Ben quipped.

“if that is an inquiry as to whether that company was social, professional or between the sheets of my bed I dare to say that it is none of your business, but then any man who would have the balls to come here and look for answers from me as to his death I would assume is a man who he held in very close regard so I will grant you the consideration of an answer. Hollingsworth I’m sure you can understand that I my line of work, the need of confidentiality both in my affairs and in the affairs of this establishment is paramount. I can however assure you that my situation was not in any way connected to his death.” She stated.

“How can you be sure of that Ms. Kincaid?” He questioned.

“Because there is no way there could be a connection. What I had him dealing with was related to the operation of this house and well...to put it simply and without saying too much an expansion of my business operations in other towns nearby. Nothing as you can see that would have anything to do with his death, or the group of men who killed him.”

“Your right Md. Kincaid. I guess as his friend I was just hoping that something might come from the knowledge of his last couple of days on this earth so I might find who was responsible. He was a good man and he and I were very close. I feel I owed that to him to at least try to find those who did him wrong and bring them to justice.” He replied as he stood up and started to walk to the

It was called an event “so bizarre that historians would have to reach back in Biblical times to find a calamity big enough for comparison” (109) and “quite possibly the most important single event in the history of religions” (104). Religious historian and author J. Z. Smith’s essay is a shocking and eye opening expose into the life of James Jones and the congregants of the Peoples Temple, all of whom committed mass suicide on November 18,1978 in Jonestown, Guyana. Smith uses this essay as an educational and informational piece explaining what he thinks happened and why, while also chastising his fellow religious scholars for focusing on long passed religious matters instead of participating in public conversations about the current state of Jonestown. Smith is correct in asserting that, “if the events of Jonestown are a behavioral skandalon to the Enlightenment faith, then the refusal of the academy to interpret Jonestown is, at least, an equivalent skandalon to the same faith” (111). Smith’s frustration is almost palpable in this essay, while he is desperately trying to explain what our responsibilities as scholars are.…
