In 1989 Charles Taylor stared the Liberia civil war. He was a warlord and was elected president in 1997. For six year, before he was forced into exile in Nigeria he governed Liberia. He was convicted for 11 charges of war crime and crime against humanity. This was for his alleged role in the brutal civil war in neighbouring Sierra Leone. He was accused of backing rebels that are responsible for widespread atrocities. Thought the judge found that Taylor didn’t command the rebels as alleged but that Charles Taylor sold diamonds for them and also supplied them with weapons and fighters for sierra Leone’s revolutionary united front rebels that were notorious is for hacking off hands and legs of the civilians during their decade-long war.
Charles Taylor knew that these rebels were committing atrocities against the civilians and so he shared the criminal responsibility. His argue was that he only dealt with the rebel for peace talks but the judge found that in fact at the same time Charles Taylor had he secretly urging the rebels to continue there attacks.

The case was moved to the Netherlands instead of happening in Sierra Leone, as they didn’t want the hearing to spark fresh instability between Sierra Leone and Liberia. Charles Taylor was sentenced to 50-years on May 30th 2012 and his appeal was rejected.
