The Handling of the Charles Oakley and James Dolan Feud On February 7th, 2017 former New York Knicks star Charles Oakley was ejected from Madison Square Garden following a verbal altercation with Knicks owner James Dolan. As Oakley was being ejected from Madison Square Garden, he became physical with arena security, shoving multiple security guards, including striking one in the face. Following the incident, Oakley was charged with three counts of misdemeanor assault and one count of trespassing. Within the immediate time following the incident, Dolan had Oakley banned from Madison Square Garden for Knicks games indefinitely. The handling of the situation by the Knicks public relations department has been

This meeting itself could be viewed as a public relations move by Adam Silver in hopes of keeping various publics at ease with the situation, hoping the incident would not continue to hurt one of the NBA’s biggest assets and brands. In what was described as an emotional meeting by Silver, the two sides were able to have a civil meeting, with Dolan ultimately lifting Oakley’s ban from Madison Square Garden. However, in the days afterwards, the saga took a new turn and turned into a public relations nightmare for all involved. During an interview on New York’s 98.7 FM ESPN radio station, Dolan made several comments about Oakley, that were seen as highly disrespectful and inappropriate in their own right. During the interview, Dolan suggested that Oakley is an alcoholic and that he suffers from anger issues, ultimately causing the conflict that happened on February 7th. Following Dolan’s remarks on the radio, the Knicks public relations department outside of their immediate comments have stayed rather quiet not making any comments. That being said, Dolan’s radio interview in itself could be seen as a public relations tactic. However, his interview overall would’ve continued to put the organization in a bad light. Currently, it seems the best public relations move made during the Oakley saga has been the meeting between Adam Silver, James …show more content…
While Oakley’s actions on February 7th were highly inappropriate, many publics that are close to the organization see Dolan as a poor owner. Dolan has been criticized throughout his time as owner of the Knicks as someone who cares more about the brand, then the actual product which publics, especially fans see. Therefore, the immediate lack of support for Dolan could strongly stem from the pre-existing conditions revolving around his already poor public image. With that being said, Dolan’s remarks on New York sports radio have caused most remaining publics to side with Oakley in the manner. Despite receiving some benefit of the doubt early on from certain publics, Dolan’s remarks have caused extreme backlash. Many see the comments as extremely disrespectful. Without a doubt, the situation overall has damaged Dolan’s image as well as the organizations image as a whole. Going forward, the Knicks public relations department will have to find a way to re-interest publics in the actual team, in hopes of bringing back fans who have threatened to not renew their season tickets, after all the most important public to a sports franchise is their fan base, especially local fans. As an ongoing situation, the way the Knicks public relations department handles it going forward will be an extremely interesting and a situation to keep a close eye

An incentive-based program for injuring players does not belong in the NFL. It is bad for the brand and bad for the people who play the game, which is far bigger than one coach or one team or one season (Darlington, 2012, pg. 1). Through the scandal there were many suspensions and penalties that were put in place to reprimand the franchise for its actions. Head Coach Sean Payton received a one-year suspension while General Manager Mickey Loomis was only suspended for eight games. Assistant Head Coach Joe Witt received a six game suspension and Defensive Gregg Williams was suspended indefinitely from the team.…

Bob Knight, often called as “The General” is one of the distinguished basketball coaches in the United States who had a unique but controversial leadership style albeit being successful in terms of most wins in Division 1 basketball as well as a lucrative salary. After 29 years of remarkable career at Indiana University as a Coach, in September 2000, Indiana University’s president, Myles Brand fired him for his inappropriate behavior during zero-tolerance period. Upon reading the article “Coach Knight: The Will to Win”, I believe firing Bob Knight was the right decision although Bob Knight led the Indiana Hoosiers to 3 national championships and number of Knight’s former players have gone on to coach in college (such as Mike Krzyzewski of Duke University) and in the NBA. Coach Knight’s leadership style was intimidating and abusive which instilled fear and discomfort among many of his students and other people around him.…

Often it is the minority athlete who is spoken of negatively in the news or on social media. “More than likely the images and names conjured up when speaking of athletes in trouble are of Blacks and other athletes of color, not the Tom Bradys, Ben Roethlisberger 's of the athletic world who work alongside the Black standouts” (Muhammad, 2009)Dr. Richard Lapchick, Director of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports at the University of Central states presents the media has produced two types of perceptions about minority athletes that in general they are prone to violence against females and use drugs and that blacks athletes are black athletes are prone to do both (Muhammad, 2009)Many black athletes are targeted because of their celebrity status and their ability to have a positive impact on black youth.…

Michael Lewis's article, The No-Stats All-Star discusses how a defensive basketball player has terrible stats but whatever team he's on does significantly better and the opponent notably worse. To begin with basketball player Shane Battier is considered a "marginal" basketball player by some but always seems to be the reason whatever team he's on is winning, yet he's often discredited for it. To continue, Daryl Morey was hired by the rockets head coach (Shane Battier's team) to rethink the game; he was to take all the statistics and figure out a way to use them to their upper hand. To add on selfish and selfless players can both be found in the NBA, Battier is a prime example of a selfless player, he’s always one step ahead and is helping…

Josh, it is with certainty that violence is regarded as part of the game; thus, barbaric behavior takes a back seat to what would be felony assault and battery outside the arena. It is expected that sports is aggressive however, the real question is, What is the boundary where an injury is the result of honest play turn into an injury as a result of excessive, intentional use of force subjecting the player to criminal liability? In regards to the case you mentioned between Benson and Abdul-Jabbar, in my opinion Abdul-Jabbar definitely crossed the line for he deliberately assaulted Benson with malicious intent. In our society, it is interesting that many sports celebrities (and most of their fans) appear to feel they are entitled to immunity…
