The book Simply Christian by N.T. Wright there are three main parts, “Echoes of a Voice”, “Staring at the Sun”, and “Reflecting the Image”. In part 1, “Echoes of a Voice”, he isolates four voices: the longing for justice, the thirst for spirituality, the craving for relationships, and the attraction of beauty each of which point the human soul toward God. He focuses on our longing for justice first. He doesn’t understand how on one hand we all have the same sense that justice exists but on the other hand after millennia of humans existing we can’t get any closer to it than the ancients did.…

When the Puritans sailed over to the New World from England so they could purify The Church, they were threatened by many who argued for religious toleration within the community. Although Nathaniel Ward, who was against toleration, fought tirelessly to save all Puritan beliefs with his written works and legal codes, men like Roger Williams and his arguments in support of religious toleration and separation of civil government and religion surpass any attempt made against him. . Being born to a Puritan minister, it was almost certain Nathaniel Ward would soon follow behind his father’s footsteps even after becoming a practicing lawyer in England. Once he became a clergyman he was soon dismissed from office for not conforming and at a late age during the year of 1934 sailed to the Puritan community in Massachusetts Bay Colony where he became a prevalent member of the church because of his good educated background. It was here where Ward would spend the rest of his life fighting against religious toleration and keeping the Puritan religion pure against all the stacking odds against the church in the years to follow.…
Secular Humanism exists mainly because of evil. When something terrible happens, people lose faith. If a God is so powerful and loving, why does he allow evil? As the Greek philosopher Epicurus wrote: “If the Gods have the will to remove evil and cannot, then they are not all-powerful. If they are neither willing nor able, they are neither all-powerful nor benevolent.…

The American Civil War was very misunderstood in that no one really knows the exact reason of why the war started. In Apostles of Disunion, Dew discusses topics such as slavery, racism, economics and state rights to push his point of view on the audience of why the war and secession began. Charles B. Dew wrote this book to inform the audience the secession came from not just the factor of state rights during the time between 1860 and 1861. Because Dew was a Southerner himself, he writes the book off of self-knowledge, experience others, and facts including people and their perspectives on the cause. The most common claim when it came to The Civil War’s cause is it beginning due to slavery and racism in the south; however Dew argues that the…
My attitude towards Griet’s character was effected by my personal ethics and values. When Griet was exposed to a new religion after being forced to go work for the Vermeer’s at Papists’ corner I believed her initial response was bleak and uninviting. Griet described herself never feeling comfortable in what she labelled “the crucifixion room”. At this point, having such diverse and accepting views, I was irritated by her reaction and felt it puerile for her to be so disturbed from a simple painting of Christ. Like most readers I considered Griet’s ignorant response to new surroundings as bland and unadventurous and her reaction to a new religion as somewhat discriminative.…

In his book, Introducing Theologies Of Religion, Paul Knitter discusses four different models of how Christians may respond to religions that are not their own. The models include: the Replacement model, the Fulfillment model, the Mutuality model, and the Acceptance model. The book is organized in fours parts, a part for each model. Knitter begins with the Replacement model; he says that the Fundamentalists use this model the most. Fundamentalists and Evangelicals make up a big part of contemporary Christianity.…
In Apostles of Disunion, Charles Dew discusses how he originally thought that states’ rights were the predominant reason that the Civil War occurred. This point of view stemmed from his readings as a boy and his ancestor’s experiences with the war. The central idea behind the authors writing of the book is his analysis of the letters and speeches that the secession commissioners wrote, in which he sought the reasons other than states’ rights to their secession from the Union. Correspondingly, he argues for the centrality of race and slavery as the reasons for the South’s secession. What’s more, is the reasoning behind why the author is writing this book and his projected achievements from doing so.…
