The Hinman murder was only because Manson needed money, Hinman was Mason’s friend. Manson had sent Bobby Beausoleil, Mary Brunner, and Susan Atkins to go persuade Hinman to give them money. When Hinman was uncooperative he was held hostage. “After a few days Manson went over with a sword and slashed Hinman’s left ear” (Crime Library).
