Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr. was an American aviator and war veteran. He was born in Detroit Michigan on February 4, 1902. At the age of eighteen he enrolled into the University of Wisconsin to study mechanical engineering. After two years of college he became a barnstormer which is a daredevil pilot. As a barnstormer he performed at fairs and other events. He then enlisted in the army in 1924 and became an Army Air Force Reserve Pilot. Also he worked at an airmail service in St. Louis flying mail from St. Louis to Chicago. A hotel owner going by the name of Raymond Orteig was offering a 25,000 dollar prize to any pilot to cross from New York to Paris without stopping. Charles Lindbergh was that man. The Spirit of St. Louis was the name of his airplane. It was a monoplane that he ordered and configured to his own design. This was the plane that he used to cross the Atlantic Ocean. On May 20 of 1927 Charles started his flight on Long Island, New York and ended on May 21, just 33 and a half hours later, in Paris. In Paris he was met with a crowd of more than 100,000 people. There first son was born Charles Augustus Jr. At just twenty months old there baby was kidnapped. The babies kidnapping reached news stations everywhere. Even reaching famous mob boss Al Capone. Al Capone offered his condolences to the Lindbergh’s, set a 10,000 dollar reward for information, and also offered to use his criminal connections if released from jail. Of course Lindbergh didn’t except the offer. A few weeks later the baby was found dead in the woods a few miles from there house. The police followed the 50,000 dollar ransom that the Lindbergh’s paid and at the end of it they found Bruno Hauptmann who was later convicted and executed for killing Charles Augustus Lindbergh
