Researcher Charles J Stewart shows how communication can be powerful in his study of Stokely Carmichael’s rhetoric of black power during the civil rights movement. Stewart analyzes the rhetorical strategies of Carmichael and compares him to other civil rights activists. Stewart shows that Carmichaels strategic use of rhetoric empowered his movement and drew the attention and influence of many young activists (429-446). This kind of influence is an example of how powerful communication can be. Since communication can be powerful, it can also be effective in solving problems. Carmichael’s powerful influence was effective in drawing attention to and accomplishing progress in the civil rights movement. One obstacle of communication that can cause a misunderstanding is the issue of cultural barriers. Different dialogues between certain identities can be problematic because of the different experiences that people of different identities face. This problem is identified by researcher Marsha Houston in her study on dialogues between black women and white women. Houston highlights the many differences in communication between the two, including differences in speaking styles and rhetoric (133-139). These differences sometimes produce problems and misunderstandings during social interactions . While the study is critical of communication, ironically the study itself demonstrates an important advantage of communication. Communication can be used to identify barriers and problems of communication, which is a necessary step in solving the problems of communication. When limitations are recognized it allows for people to potentially make a change in the way they talk with those of different cultural identities. This study specifically points out the issues of communication between white and black women, which is the first step in solving these issues.
