However, the main competition in the UK market appears to be from a company called Masons Beans. They, like the Cool Beans Company, specialise in gourmet beans. Initially they were called Proper Beans, but have since rebranded. Masons Beans are available to buy in Fortum and Mason and the unit price is set at the level of £3.95 per 330g pot. While the Masons Beans products were only launched one year ago, it has already had great success and publicity. The product has been shortlisted as the Most Exciting New Brand & People’s Choice at Virgin Foodpreneur 2014 (Masons Beans, 2015). They are being stocked by Selfridges where they are currently doing tastings to enhance publicity (Masons Beans, 2015). Masons Beans have a wide variety of flavours, including Kentish cider, pork sausage and apple, ham hock, potato and thyme, English mustard and sundried tomato (see Figure 12). These flavours are specifically targeting English tastes, and a company such as Cool Beans, which currently only offers three flavours with no real cultural …show more content…
The suppliers in the UK market enjoy strong market position, which allows for decreasing manufacturing costs as well as benefiting from economies of scale. The high competition decreases the bargaining power of suppliers who remain focused on securing their share in the value chain. In the food industry, new product categories are constantly emerging (Bord Bia, 2009). In addition, the power of suppliers is limited due to the expanding power of buyers, who face much less switching costs. However, attempting to achieve this idea is challenging as it involves making products affordable at competitive prices. This would highly influence Sainsbury’s as their main source of income comes from customers and possible consumers spending their money in their store, therefore, Sainsbury’s would use strategies such as reduction in bulks of products and necessities in order to attract new and existing consumers into buying more Sainsbury’s products rather than them going to other competitors such as Asda or Morrison’s. All these tactics and strategies in attracting the attention of customers is what makes them the most important stakeholder, they ultimately determine which supermarket chain will be…

The bargaining power of suppliers can sometimes be difficult when it comes to a large retail industry such as Sam’s. If the competitors are able to shop around for the same items, then the supplier has the advantage to name their price (Strategic Management, 2014c, p. 94). Sam’s makes large purchases, so the customers have a lower price. When a supplier’s merchandise is not doing well, the retailer has the ability to make the suppliers suffer. For example, Rubbermaid was placed on a lower shelf because the items were not moving at a fast pace for profits (Riper, 2007, p. 2).…

As most people know, with the exception of a few industries such as the utility industry, monopolies and oligopolies tend to be bad for consumers and suppliers in the form of unfair practices and ultimately higher prices, however I don’t think this is the case in the supermarket/grocery industry. A report was concluded in late 2015; it was the Competition Policy Review, headed by Professor Ian Harper. The report came to the conclusion that the barriers to entry into the supermarket/grocery store industry were not too significant as to deter all competition from entering the market. This has been followed by Aldi’s success in the market.…

In his article, The problem with fair trade coffee, Colleen Haight argues that since the fair trade coffee price is paid 20 cents per pound higher than normal coffees, fair trade coffee comes from various quality levels of coffees, then the quality problems cannot be tackled due to the “protection” for farmers. In addition, some farmers will plant coffee beans in an unsuitable place for the high profits in Latin America and Africa, which will cause the negative consequences such as unsuccessful production with low quality coffees. However, some private farmers cannot be certified as fair trade coffee even if they have higher quality and protected sustainable environment. He mentions the case that Kraft and Nestle pay more money on producers…
