Charles Dickens Second Industrial Revolution

During the Victorian Era, it was a time of prosperity for the rich, and it was a desperate time for the lower class; the poor only got poorer. It was the Industrial Revolution, but as all revolutions there were side effects. “It was a tremendously exciting period when many artistic styles, literary schools, as well as, social, political and religious movements flourished. It was a time of prosperity, broad imperial expansion, and great political reform. It was also a time, which today we associate with "prudishness" and "repression". Without a doubt, it was such an extraordinarily and complex age, that it sometimes is called the Second English Renaissance. They had to work on the cotton mills as scavengers, they were in danger when they had to crawl under the machinery to gather the bits of cotton under the moving machinery. They had to work in coal mines, moving heavy cargo of coal. And like David Copperfield, they, were “forced” to work. David Copperfield had to work on the wine bottling factory, where the children would clean the bottles in hot boiling water as seen in Charles Dickens movie “David Copperfield”. They were only paid a few cents a day, and worked on empty stomachs and they were forced to work up to 16 hours a day. Queen Victoria was the one who created the classes in some way, she though that it was ideal on how someone behaves, the way she did, and how much money they have, on how they live. The Industrial Revolution was happening, so the lower class were losing their jobs to machines, it was like the great depression for them. They were losing their jobs because there were machines being invented, and they didn’t need as much people to the work. Grown men were losing their jobs due to this. They were also losing their jobs to small children and women, because they were paid less than men, and that benefited the factories, they paid the children and women less for the same job a men could do. These were times where children had to work in order for the family to survive, they had to support their family. Like seen on Charles Dickens “David Copperfield”. David Copperfield, was working to survive and to support his fatherly figure Mr.Wilkins Micawber, as you saw on the movie, these were also times of debts, Mr.Wilkins Micawber owed money to quite a few men. Families were being separated, like David Copperfield was separated from his mother, kids were being sent to schools; harsh school were they would make them men of society.
