SETTING
The events of this classic novel mainly take place in London, England. Research indicates this was set in the early 19th century, which was around the book’s publication date. From Oliver’s birth to his escape from the Sowerberry household, the action revolved around the countryside, within sixty-five miles from the city. The suburban abodes where Oliver lived were generally filthy, plain, and rustic. These buildings would include the farm Oliver was born in, the orphanage for young children, the workhouse, and the Sowerberrys’ house. He is amicable, ignorant and respectful. Even through his continuous adversity, the lad kept his naiveté. For this reason, Oliver is unrealistic. Fagin tried to convince him to join his gang of pickpockets, but was unsuccessful. Even though this boy is surrounded by hate, his spirit was unwavering. Oliver is incorruptible. Another outcome of his sincerity is sympathy from readers. It is not uncommon for someone to feel compassion towards this trusting boy, especially when he was framed by Noah, the Artful Dodger, and Charley Bates. He constantly emphasizes how tough life is for penniless Oliver. The boy’s environment, treatment by superiors, and relentless hunger are just some of the grim truths of pauperism that Dickens is unafraid to reveal to the reader.
Another dominant theme in this novel pertains to the social classes in Old England. A message about this theme would be: Social classes don’t define who you are as a person. This is evident from the characters’ true personalities and their wide-ranging social classes. There are nice/evil paupers as well as caring/sinister gentlemen.
Dickens conveyed these themes well by using third person perspective (limited) and Oliver’s experiences, like his verbalization of tone. Oliver was the one who discovered the harsh realities of poverty as well as with uncovering the genuine nature of people from different social classes. Taking the reader along in his arduous adventure teaches them the same things he has learned. Other things that Oliver is not there to witness are shown by third person
