Hard Life: It was the best of times; it was the worst of times Throughout the time period of one's life, there may be, ordinarily, a discovered issue with money and financial situations. Consequently, you may find these types of issues with yourself or maybe even someone that you know. Charles Dickens himself had financial issues all throughout his childhood, resulting in a childhood that would not be as enjoyable as mine or yours today. During this time period, Dickens says “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times”(Dickens, 1859). You could imagine how depressing of a time period this must have been for him to have undergone while his father was in and out of a debtors prison due

This person may be just a friend or even a lover. For Dickens, Maria was in fact that person. Maria Beadnell had been 20 years of age when they had first met; Dickens was 18. They found an instant love for each other so, consequently, they wanted to be married as soon as possible. Maria’s father, however, did not perceive eye-to-eye with Maria and Dickens. Maria’s father had thought that Dickens was “too young and lacking in prospects to be considered a serious suitor”(2018) Although Maria’s father felt this way, this did not stop Dickens from loving Maria. During the coming years, Dickens worked as a stenographer and a shorthand reporter. With Dickens being dissatisfied with his own career, an idea had sparked to try and impress Maria’s parents by becoming an actor. He even signed up for an audition, but on the day of the audition, he was sick and missed said appointment. The young Maria of that time, even inspired the character of Dora in the novel David Copperfield. As Dickens states in David Copperfield,
I don’t remember who was there except Dora. I have not the least idea for what we had for dinner, besides Dora. My impression is, that I dined off Dora, entirely, and sent away half-a-dozen plates untouched. I sat next to her. I talked to her. She had the most delightful little voice, the gayest little laugh, the pleasantest and most fascinating little ways, that ever led a lost youth into hopeless slavery. She was rather diminutive altogether. So much the more precious, I thought...- (Dickens,

Charles Dickens portrays Madame Defarge, Sydney Carton, and Charles Darney as morally ambiguous characters. Dickens’ background as a muckraker dissected into it to reveal the hidden story boiling underneath human nature. Muckrakers are incredibly objective, as was Dickens’ writing style. His past experiences gave him an insight of morally ambiguous characters to use in his novel. Madame Defarge can clearly be described as hasty, vengeful, whatever nasty adjective seen fit.…

The two sources I will be analysing and comparing are both in favour of a de-crease in capital statutes but for very different reasons and together they are repre-sentatives of a change in mentalities towards capital punishment in the first half of the nineteenth century. The first primary source under study is an extract from the Report of the select committee on criminal laws. This committee was set up in 1819 by the House of Commons and was expected to publish a report on the state of criminal law but especially on the capital punishment and give their recommendations in an official report.…

Dombey and Son provide tones of fulfilling excitement and blissful euphoria for the main character. When the baby is born, the man feels he has someone to fulfill him and make his household complete. Dickens uses this euphoria to illustrate the character’s perceived self-importance and his need for an heir to succeed him. The organization of the passage moves from a formation to fulfillment and finally to planning.…

“Charles Dickens: Impact on Medicine and Society” by Meir Kryger talks about how Charles Dickens novels have had a significant impact on the medical field. Meir Kryger debates that Charles Dickens had an important role in the development of sleep medicine and founding obesity syndromes. Kryger uses passages from Dickens novel The Pickwick Papers to support his argument. In The Pickwick Papers, one of the characters displayed symptoms of pickwickian syndrome and obese hypoventilation syndrome, both of these syndromes were not yet recorded in medical literature.…

"Hey Hannah, what are you reading?" "I'm reading a tragedy by Charles Dickens. What about you, Sarah?" "I'm reading a sonnet by Shakespeare." Being a literature lover, I spent my entire childhood reading the works of Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare, which were very different from each other, yet somehow the roads merged and they were somewhat similar.…

With these important details, it is shown that Charles Dickens did sympathize with the upper class citizens of the novel. To contradict this thesis, there are many examples from the first two books, ‘Recalled to Life’ and ‘The Golden Thread.’ The aristocrats are depicted as awful people…

The Broken Auditory Mask In his novel Little Dorrit, Charles Dickens constructs the character of William Dorrit, father of Amy Dorrit and a debtor from the Marshalsea prison, who inherits a large sum of wealth. He is presented as a paranoid, insecure, and broken man when reminded of the Marshalsea prison. From his introduction in “The Father of the Marshalsea” where he witnesses Amy’s birth and receives testimonials from the collegians to his eventual demise after his hallucinogenic speech in “The Storming of the Castle in the Air,” Dickens draws the reader's attention through his use of repeated breaks in Mr. Dorrit’s dialogue to highlight the struggle of refusing to acknowledge one’s past identity, splitting his personality in the process, indicating how the pressure of Society forces…

Miss Havisham is a wealthy woman who was jilted and could never let it go. Orlick is a man who believes he has done no wrong, and goes to extremes to seek vengeance for those who destroyed his reputation. Biddy and Joe are on the other end of the spectrum, lacking obsession, living happily, yet poor. Herbert fits somewhere in between, having the drive for success to become wealthy, but without the destructive obsession. Dickens’ characters reveal how an excessive obsession can cripple one and harm innocent bystanders, and how just the right amount of obsession turns an individual into a driven and motivated success.…

Many people have opinions over what makes you more entitled than the next. You get this snobbishness between the periods in literature. Most have debated who was able to have a richer more substantial literary life and whom has influenced it’s readers to greater things. Many need to ask themselves, “Who makes the greater social impact?” the Victorians or the writers in the 20th century, the Modernists.…

The Influences of Charles Dickens Although it was a time for peace, prosperity, and freedom, the Victorian era did not come without hardships and doubt. In the age of Queen Victoria, otherwise known as the Victorian era, the British people’s long struggle for personal liberty was accomplished and democratic government became fully entrenched (qtd. by McCoy and Harlan, The Victorian Age, 99). The Victorian culture could be seen as a “fiercely contested imagine space,” as well as fraught with “contradictory” aspects.…
