Charles Dickens One of the greatest writers of his time and all time, Charles Dickens, wrote of the social problems that went on in his everyday life. Charles Dickens showed that the poor laws were not helping the poor but in fact making it worst for the people. Charles Dickens was born in the Victorian Era during the time the poor laws were being enforced. He wrote of the oppressed people of England in the classic novel “Oliver Twist.” He targeted the social elite to show that they were living lives like they were kings and the poor were their peasants that would forever stay poor. Most of his novels were based off experiences that he lived through. That did not stop Dickens from becoming one of the greatest writers to have ever lived. …show more content…
In February 1837 Dickens began to publish “Oliver Twist” at the same time as “The Pickwick Papers.” He was not even done writing “The Pickwick Papers,” which still went on getting published for another nine months before it was finished. The first section of “Oliver Twist” that was published was received fairly well. “Oliver Twist” which is Charles Dickens second published work, is based off the life that Dickens saw when he was still a young boy. He wrote “Oliver Twist” to criticize how the poor people were treated with the passing of the poor laws. He wanted to get across how the magistrate treated the poor and how they were forced to go to the workhouses. The workhouses where so terrible people where dying in them. The officials made the workhouses so bad that it would make people get up and go look for jobs. Instead it broke their spirits and made it worst for them. People would say they would rather die instead of going to the workhouse. He experienced these poor laws when his father went to jail for owing debt, which forced Charles to drop out of school to support his family and try to get his father out of jail. Charles Dickens lived a poor life as a young boy. He saw every day the things he wrote about. He used his own personal experience to appeal to the audience. That is what made …show more content…
On the other hand critics had something to say. Many critics had something to say about Dickens calling Fagin “a Jew.” Many of the Jewish critics commented on that, especially on the parts when Dickens used the word over two hundred times. After this was brought up Charles Dickens began to use the word Jew a lot less. He went from using it over 100 times to using it not even 50 times. Others said things like “Charles Dickens is a genius.” Many commented on how “Oliver Twist” was his darkest writing so far, and how it still is to this day. There were people that understood the message that Charles Dickens was trying to get across when writing “Oliver Twist.” Charles Dickens received tremendous praise for “Oliver Twist” with many people saying that it was the greatest novel they had ever read. They would say that Charles knew just how much to write. It was never too much or not enough. He always would put enough excitement but would make sure to leave just the right amount out to get the reader wanting more. This is what made his novels so popular.
