The main character in the short story Charles written by Shirley Jackson is a boy named Laurie. Laurie just started kindergarten and he seems to be having a lot of trouble adjusting .
This troubled character is constantly causing mischief at school. For example, he is spanked by his teacher due to his horrible character traits such as disrespect, being secretive and self absorbed.

First , Laurie is a very disrespectful boy because he is always causing trouble at home and at school. When Laurie get's home he spills his sister's milk and when he sits with his parents to eat lunch, the first thing he says is to his father is "look up look down look at my thumb gee you're dumb". The fact that he can say something like that to his dad means that he doesn't have any respect towards to his parents. Then, when Laurie's Father asked "did you learn anything?"

Since laurie is always causing trouble at school he thinks it will be a great idea to talk about himself Nedschati 2 without getting into any trouble . " you must have your hands full with Charles , Charles? we don't have a Charles in kindergarten"[shirley 66] . The quote states that Laurie's mother doesn't seem suspicious at all when Laurie talks about Charles , she trusted Laurie so much that she thought he is actually telling the truth . Also at one one point of the story Laurie's father asks him what he thinks the school is going to do to Charles and he says "throw him out of school I guess" [shirley 66] . So since Laurie is so sneaky that he feels as if he should not blame himself for all the trouble he has caused at school because he doesn't want to get into trouble and doesn't want anyone to find out the plan for him wanting to get thrown out of
