The short story “Gryphon” by Charles Baxter, is about a 4th grade boy, named Tommy, who attends a school in 5 Oaks, Michigan. On a Wednesday afternoon, his normal teacher, Mr. Hibler developed a nasty cough. Then the next day he was replaced by a substitute teacher, named Miss Ferenczi, who tells great, some true and some untrue, stories. Tommy starts to like Miss Ferenczi, the moment he sees her and continues to the entire story because of how odd she is. Tommy loves weird things, that is why he like Miss Ferenczi so much. “I had liked her. She was strange”(pg.56, l.413) He has a great fondness for her because she is unusual.

Not a lot of people can say they had marionette lines, like Pinocchio. “…the supply of substitute teachers was limited…a pool of about four mothers.” All the other normal substitutes were very different from Miss Ferenczi.
