Charles the Great
Charlemagne, or Charles the Great, was born in 742 to Pepin the Short and Bertrada of Laon. The oldest of four children, Charlemagne rose to great power and significance. He rebuilt the crumbling society of Medieval Europe by introducing numerous social, political and cultural reforms in what we now call the Carolingian Renaissance. He became the King of the Franks, and gained the title of Holy Roman Emperor. Through many military campaigns, he unified northern Europe and established a flourishing society.

Charlemagne also battled the Huns in the Frankish-Avar War. Starting in 791, this five year battle involved both Charlemagne and his son, Pepin of Italy. In 796, the Franks subjugated the Avars and gained control of central Danube.
Beginning in 801, Charlemagne and Byzantine Emperor Nicephorus I battled for control of Venetia and the Dalmatian Coast. The war raged over both land and sea, the Franks progressed well. In 809, their rival engaged in a second battle with the Bulgars. Unable to cope with two wars, the Byzantines negotiated with Charlemagne to end the fight. In 810, Charlemagne handed control of the Dalmatian coast to the Byzantine Emperor. In return, Nicephorus agreed to recognize Charlemagne as Emperor of the West.
In 800, Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III. The Pope had been accused of adultery, and had fled Rome. Charlemagne then escorted Leo back into Rome and forced his reinstatement. This ensured that Christianity would flourish in Western Europe. Then, in 813, Charlemagne’s son Louie the Pious was crowned co-Emperor.
During his rule, Charlemagne introduced many new social, political and cultural reforms; he began the Carolingian Renaissance. He reinforced his father’s use of currency, after realizing how the poor were abused by the current barter method. Charlemagne also hired
