Charity Pros And Cons Essay

If the wealthy gave up a good portion of their wealth and donated it to the poor, what would happen? At first glance, this seems like nothing could go wrong. Charities would have money to fund themselves and to give to the millions of people who need it. However, this massive shift in spending would be detrimental to the economy. Like any situation, there are pros and cons to the massive donations to charities. If more wealthy people became philanthropists and donated huge sums of their money to charities, the world would see immediate benefits. Charities would be properly funded and have enough to help people live a comfortable life. Shelters would be able to house more people as well as feed and clothe more people. The government would have much less money to spend on important things like infrastructure and health care. People would not have access to basic health care like Medicare and Medicaid, because these are funded by tax dollars. In addition to this, social security would not be properly funded and many retired workers would not get paid and would then not have access to basic needs without going out and finding a new job; however, many would not be able to get a new job to replace the money they would have gotten from Social Security due to ailments or old age. The United States would end up with significant unemployment, because stores that sell luxury goods would see sharp declines in sales, and end up going out of business. The consumer-based economy of the United States combined with mass charity efforts would see more people who need charity, because they would no longer be able to get help from the government.
