It started with fewer kinds of sports than today's version of the Olympics. The Olympic sports back then included running, long jump, shot put, javelin, discus, wrestling, boxing, pankration, and equestrain competitions.
But the chariot race came first, followed by a race for fully-grown horses, two-mule chariot race, a race for mares, a two-horse chariot race and finally chariot races for foals. they lasted 12 laps around the Hippodrome, and horse races 6 laps. Both chariot were exiting but also dangerous, because were the chariots turned at the same time wheels could lock together and cause crashing.
