Scott Fitzgerald's Treatment Of Women In The Great Gatsby

Scott Fitzgerald is the famous author of the book, “The Great Gatsby.” While some people do love the book, other people also think that Scott is a bit harsh as far as women are concerned. In the book only three women characters are mentioned and all of them are shown to be heartless monsters. Whether people think this is just coincidence or sexist is their opinion. This essay however will be going into detail on Fitzgerald 's opinions on women lacking in compassion. The first character that can be used as an example of Fitzgerald 's opinions on women that will be mentioned is Jordan Baker. This character shows many personality flaws. She loves gossip and seeing other people suffer. She demonstrates in the book this off putting characteristic when she says to Nick, ‘“ Don 't talk. I want to hear what happens”’(Fitzgerald 12). People may misunderstand this as Jordan caring for her friend but as Fitzgerald describes her in the book people can gather that Jordan is listening for pure enjoyment. Fitzgerald was warning people that even with new money, happiness doesn’t necessarily come as a package deal. People should also bring attention to his other warning toward falling in love with a women. In the book Tom and Daisy are husband and wife but they are both unfaithful. Jordan and Nick have a short fling but Jordan disappoints Nick in her lack of compassion toward other people. Myrtle also cheats on her loving and providing husband. There are far too many examples Fitzgerald gives that look down on women for it to just be coincidence. While looking at any of the examples singularly people may not make the connection but when looking back at all of the examples put together people can see that Fitzgerald has some kind of problem against
