Characters In Beowulf Book Vs Movie

Difference of Characters
In today’s society we are always told to read the book before we watch a movie, because sometimes there can be a difference in characters which can possibly change the way we first thought the movie was gonna be like, such as Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson). When you read the book you are able to get all the details from the story and paint a picture in your head. This helps you get a better understanding of what is occurring in the movie as you are watching it for the first time. The movie tends to leave a lot of details out because of the time constriction. If a movie would contain all the details in the original story the movie would be too long. Because of this the directors and writers of movies are forced to only record the most important scenes, just enough to be able to connect the storyline. For this reason, if the book is read first you are able to get a better understanding as the scenes are shifting because you can “read

Beowulf's dignity throughout the Epic is sky high and no one can break him down, which leads to him being able to rip Grendel's claw from its shoulder socket, sending the mortally wounded beast fleeing to his mere on the first night. Once Grendel's mother saw what happened to Grendel she went back up to Heorot that night, retrieves her son's claw, and murderously abducts one of the Scyldings while Beowulf sleeps elsewhere.
In the movie, Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson), Beowulf is still portrayed as the book but his head is bigger than the Earth. In the movie after Beowulf rips off Grendel’s arm his mother also attacks the king's thanes. When Beowulf is on his trek for Grendel he is approached by a witch named Selma, a beautiful and sensuous witch whose alliances are divided between Beowulf and his

Beowulf is making a bad name for hero’s around the world. A hero should not be boastful, they should do something for the benefit of the people, not for himself. During Beowulf’s life, his constant arrogance and overconfidence lead him to glory. In the end however, it is a fatal flaw that proves to be his downfall. His overall cockiness leads him to an easy victory over the monster Grendel, but Grendel’s defeat could be interpreted as pure luck. Then, in Beowulf’s second battle he is almost defeated when he chases Grendel’s mother down for the sake of personal glory, and barely escapes with his life. In his third and final battle, Beowulf’s confidence finally betrays him, and his luck runs out.…

Beowulf is battling these monsters using his mind, there is a different weapon and a different technique used to fight the three monsters off. The first battle, between Grendel and Beowulf.…

We as humans have always changed, from our everyday way of life to our perception of the universe. A thousand years can change a lot in society, and we see this in the Epic of Beowulf and the motion picture of Beowulf. They are separated in time and in the story to fit the audience of said time. The classic epic Beowulf differs significantly from the 2005 movie of its title directed by Sturla Gunnarsson. The differences included added characters, Beowulf is seeming more emotional and vulnerable in the movie, and Grendel is more human, especially because of an added backstory and deeds that make you question “He is really doing wrong?” in the movie.…

For instance “The Battle with Grendel’s Mother” never transpired; instead she had a child with Beowulf. In “The Battle with Grendel”, the film insinuates that the men were awake when Grendel attacked and he also attacked numerous men. In the text on the hand, the men were asleep when he attacked and he only attacked Wiglaf. In “The Battle with The Dragon” viewers learned that he was actually Beowulf’s son. Throughout time there have been multiple analyses of Beowulf detailing the similarities and differences between the 2007 film and the various text translations.…

Beowulf is an epic set in Anglo-Saxon England in around the 9th century. This literary piece is composed of manifold fighting scenarios against large beasts and creatures, treacherous journeys characters must make, and tales of great bravery, victory and, in some cases, defeat. The main character and most recognised hero in Beowulf is Beowulf himself. He fought many battles throughout his life and few are highlighted throughout out the story and these truly enhance the vast amount of bravery and warrior-like qualities this man possessed. Beowulf’s heroic adventures in the story begins when he arrives in Herot.…

Beowulf was interesting and I enjoyed both the movie and the book, yet in the book Beowulf went home to be king, his warriors fled him, and the dragon was angry about the thief; even though, in the movie, Beowulf was king of Herot, his warriors helped him during battle, and he was the dragon’s father. Beowulf became king according to the book upon his arrival to his homeland; however, in the movie he became king of Herot. Beowulf became king of Herot because Hrothgar jumped from the castle and killed himself, yet in the book Hrothgar died. Beowulf also had no wife, mistresses, or any children during his reign as king in the book.…

The saying “there are two sides to every story” rings especially true when comparing the various personas of Grendel throughout the poem, Beowulf, the story, Grendel, and the YouTube clip shown in class. Grendel’s characterization varies greatly in the movie, book and poem equally. The contrasting viewpoints play off of the theme “Morality vs. Instinct”. Also, Grendel’s character differs based upon the perspective of the writer and his prior experiences with Grendel. However, Grendel’s action remain constant throughout each outlet.…

Beowulf is considered a heroic figure in the poem, because he protected the Danes from the beasts and in the movie he is shown more as a liar than a hero. Another difference in the book Grendel slays the Danes in the night, while they are sleeping, so that none have the chance to challenge him. But in the movie it shows Grendel bursts into Heorot in the night, but the Danes are awake, and fully witness his killing. In the book, after Grendel's death, his mother goes to Heorot to avenge him, but being weaker than her son, only makes off with a single thane. But in the movie, Beowulf is asleep in Heorot after slaying Grendel when he has a nightmare about Grendel's mother, awaking from it to see that she has silently murdered many of the men Heorot.…

In the epic poem and movie Beowulf there are a lot of differences and similarities between the two. Can you spot some of the differences that happened in the movie and the book? Well here is some of the things that I spotted out during the movie that didn’t happened in the book. First, the battle between Beowulf and Grendel in the movie they were awake and partying during his attack; however, in the book they were sleep. Second, the battle against Grendel’s mother didn’t happened in the movie, but in the book they actually fought, and he killed her.…

There are many examples in the movie and poem to show their similarities and differences in each category that I stated above such as how Grendel’s mother is a seduced but she was described very divergent in the movie and poem. Beowulf is a hero and went through a lot of battles and but have weaknesses such as women’s which is very surprising due to how a hero should act but he was different from the fact he gave up his golden horn to Grendel’s mother. In the end, people will always remember an individual by their pasts whether it’s good or bad. However, it will define an individual as a person in a long…

“Beowulf” is one of the oldest and most legendary tales of strength and valor. It only makes sense that this story would eventually be adapted by Hollywood into a film. Despite the story being as engaging as it already is, the most recent film adaption strays far from the epic poem. These changes affect the characters, themes, and plot. Though both the poem and the film are good on their own, the film’s meaning does not stay true to the original story it pays homage to.…
