An Abundance of Katherines -John Green (Finished +64) (+52 from No Country for old men -Cormac McCarthy)
Inanimate objects are nothing compared to the preciousness of animate life, yet they impact everyone’s lives greatly. In An Abundance of Katherines Colin, the main character, lives with Lindsey and her mother along with his friend Hassan. Together they help each other grow and learn; via hog hunting, cave exploring, and late night conversations. Overall the most influential objects in the story are The Mansion, his notebook/pencil, and his phone.
The Mansion is detrimental to the plot and character developement of all three adolescents. Colin and Hassan whilst on their road trip have the uncanny luck to stumble upon their to-be benefactor; Hollis. Hollis is Lindsey's mother and is incredulously wealthy. Colin’s obsession with his Theorem is enabled by this important duo. From Colin’s perspective, the entire duration of the novel is based upon this Theorem, and he spends countless hours on creating, improving, and finalizing it. Out of all of Colin’s interactions, by far, he interacts with his notebook and pencil the most: “and came home after midnight to find Colin working on his therum” (Green 128) He skipped multiple social outings to be a recluse; his only companions being his notebook and pencil. These items were in his hands when his esteemed eureka moment occurred: “the little notebook he kept at all times, and the #2 pencil, which was broken in the middles from his fall, but still wrote okay” (Green 41) They were also with him when it was turned into The Theorem and when it was finalized. The notebook and pencil remain constants while the Theorem grows and Colin’s relationship with all three things
