Have you ever read a novel or poem that had characters in them that allowed the characters to show strength during the face of adversity? I have read two novels and a poem where that is the case. The first one is the novel Ethan Forme written by Edith Wharton. Zeena showed strength when she knew her cousin Mattie and husband Ethan were getting way to close with their relationship. But Zeena did not give up. She stayed strong and things worked out for her in the end. In the poem “I Heard A Fly Buzz - When I Died” written by Emily Dickinson. The man whom is passing away shows strength during his family’s grieving time. His family was gathered around him saying their good byes. Just like any other family, they were crying and weeping over him. …show more content…
In the novel Ethan Frome, Zeena knew about Ethan and Mattie getting closer with one another. For example, when Mattie used Zeena’s pickle dish to make the dinner table pretty for Ethan. Although, she watches them and listens to them on a different level then normal. She is on the level with them. As she is in on the relationship with them. She is still fighting her own sickness at this time as well. But that did not allow Zeena to give up on her marriage and husband. Zeena stayed strong through out this difficult time. She continued to do the same things she was doing. When Ethan and Mattie got into a bad wreck which lead them to need Zeena to take care of them. Zeena knew in her head that they did not deserve what happened. That is why you always do the right things in …show more content…
Or a least that is what it seemed was happening. For Phoenix Jackson in the novel, “A Worn Path” written by Eudora Welty that is what happened. Phoenix had to go to town to the doctor office for a visit. Poor old Phoenix lived way far out in the country. On her way to town, she has a hard time. First, she gets her dress caught in a thorn bush. She has to pick her dress out of the thorn bush so it will not tear. Secondly on her way, she finds her self having to climb through and out of a barb wire fence. That is also because she did not want to tear her dress. Thankfully, her last things that she had to go through on the way to town was falling into the dutch. She kept strong though and never gave up. Which lead her to make it to the doctor office on time and in one

The novel Ethan Frome, by Edith Wharton, chronicles the life of a mysterious crippled hermit by the name of Ethan Frome as a flashback to his star-crossed relationship from his youth. In the process of relaying this story, Wharton characterizes Frome’s constantly ill-stricken wife as a villainous dead weight to his free spirit. Wharton uses imagery and dialogue in order to paint a lucid picture of Zeena Frome as an older, nagging wife who over-extends Ethan’s patience; additionally, Zeena’s unrelenting ill health serves as a metaphor for her enduring pestilence upon her husband. Wharton’s use of imagery and descriptive language establish a relaxed, wistful atmosphere throughout the novel.…

Later in the novel, when Zeena figures out later that her pickle dish was shattered, the reader finds out how special the dish was to her. She received the pickle dish as a wedding gift from her Aunt Philura Maple, leaving the dish on top of a shelf, never getting it down “[ex]cept for spring cleaning, lift[ing] it with [her] own hands” (Wharton 69). She never brings down her dish, “not even when the minster come[s] to dinner, or [her] Aunt Martha Pierce” (Wharton 69). It is obvious that the pickle dish means so much to her that she wouldn’t use it, keeping it for storage. While yelling at both Mattie and Ethan, her “voice br[eaks] and two small tears h[a]ng from her lashless lids [that] ran slowly down her cheeks” (Wharton 68-69).…

Initially, this conversation provides Ethan some clarity about his ongoing internal conflict with his passions and obligations. In Ethan’s perspective, Zeena is becoming more of an unbearable burden, as she had become an “evil energy” that “had mastered him” (Wharton 50). Isolating him, Ethan looks to find comfort in Mattie, who has an emotional relationship.…

When his mother became ill, the house became lonely and silent; only when Zeena arrived did Ethan restore his balance, describing Zeena as “smart” and “efficient”, words he would later regret (Wharton 61). Following his mother’s unfortunate death, left with only Zeena, Ethan asked her to stay with him, simply to avoid loneliness; the irony here is that, within one year, Zeena became sickly and silent, just like his mother! The love between Ethan and Mattie itself was unsuccessful, never meant to happen. When Ruth and Ned had kissed under the spruces, they had done so legitimately, since they were an engaged couple (even though they were…
