Elimination of the character history to an extent I would say hinders the story a bit. However, at the same time no inclusion of background information on the characters makes the book unique. Since Frederic Henry is the main character I’ll talk about what he symbolizes. From reading the book within the first couple of chapters, one would notice that Mr. Henry is a tough cookie, especially since he is a lieutenant meaning he holds a certain amount of power. Lieutenant Frederic Henry I would say definitely represents and can be compared to a shell or even a sheep dressed in wolf’s clothing. My purpose for saying this is because Frederic Henry is hard on the outside however, when he is known on a more personal and deeper level he is very soft and fluffy almost resembling a teddy bear. Frederic’s shell appears to be hard but once he is an acquaintance with Ms. Catherine Barkley his shell breaks allowing his inner sensitive side to show and his feelings to bleed
