Vietnam Veteran
I interviewed Sargent Jim Dombrowski, a Vietnam Veteran at the VFW in Jonesboro, GA. He is now a 68 years old retired Veteran. His physical appearance was somewhat neglected. He was drinking a cold beer and smoking a cigarette. He served from 1965 to 1967. When I started with the interview Sargent Dombrowski looked a little tense, I could also observe his anger and pain in his eyes, but at the same time he was excited to start with the interview. He has five children, four girls and one boy. He does not really see his kids very often. My first question was, how do you describe yourself? He looked down and said: I am a typical old Veteran, I enjoy coming to the VFW, drink a beer and play cards with my friends.

Fred Bentley opened the door and asked me if he could help me with something. Yes, I replied to him. I told him that I was a college student in need of an interview for my English class. He accepted and directed me to their lunch area. He sat down and put his television on mute, and with a nervous smile he told me how can I help you? I started by asking him where he was born, he said that he was born in Atlanta, GA in 1975. He is working for the city of Palmetto, and also for Fulton County. As a child he was very naughty and enjoyed to ride his bicycle. His mom was a school teacher, his dad was a factory worker. Mr. Bentley grew up in Palmetto, GA. I asked him what he wanted to be when he was a child, he said that he always wanted to be a firefighter. In the beginning of the interview he seemed nervous and shy, and then began to have more confidence on me and started to talk even more. He was laughing and told me that he was sorry for talking too much because they never have any visitors, and I laugh with him too. His first job was as a bag boy at a grocery store called Bradley’s, in Palmetto. He said it was fun to work at the store because he worked with his school friends. He loves to go hunting, fishing, and he loves to swim. He also enjoys to travel with his wife, and he also has 2 step children. He went to a technical school to study residential and commercial wiring, but he did not finished. He also said that …show more content…
Opal Mathis resides in a nursing home in Lake City, GA. Mrs. Opal looks like Mrs. Rosa Parks. Her hair is all white, wears glasses, and she uses a hearing device. When I came into her room to start with the interview, she looked at me and said “oh well young lady I am ready for my first and may be the last interview of my life,” and she started to laugh. She was sitting in her bed with a purple dress and black slippers. She is a very happy and friendly lady, she loves to make friends and talk to everybody. She was born in Brownsville, Texas in January 7, 1923. Mrs. Mathis, married to John Gable in the year of 1950. They had 4 children, but unfortunately one of them passed away when he was a baby. She misses her grandkids and she wishes to see them more often. She got up from her bed and told me to hold her hand, and she directed me to the back garden of the nursing home, while we were walking towards the garden other residents were watching us, and with joy in her voice she told them “look my granddaughter came to visit me.” I was speechless, I laughed shyly and I kept walking. Once in the garden, Mrs. Mathis showed me a big pine tree and told me that when she came to the nursing home for the first time she planted the tree to see it grow, as once she saw her kid’s grow. She started to cry and told me that she missed them, I was speechless, and at this point I saw how lonely Mrs. Mathis was. I tried to change the subject, I asked her about her first kiss, and she said

During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

From growing up in a military family, I have become very resilient and I adapt really well to change. With my surroundings changing all the time, I have to be able to quickly adapt to my new setting and find ways to fit in as quickly as possible. I have been to about twelve different schools so far, and I have lived in about eight different houses. When I live on a military base, change is constant, even if it is not my own family experiencing the orders to move that year. The houses around me fill and empty all the time with new people, and some of the military dominant schools I have been to have the same problem.…

In a tiny, run-down bar on the sketchy side of town, I sit at a booth with a hardened, grizzled war veteran who was drowning his sorrows with cheap liquor out of amber-tinted shot glass. Consequently,—because of Veteran's Day—in honour of those who served, I was asked to interview Colonel William Cohen McAdams—who served in the army, airforce, and the navy SEALs—for an article in the university paper. He was a decent-looking fellow—for someone who was missing an eye. Ironically enough, he catches more with one eye than anyone else does with two. He lost it to a shrapnel grenade during his fifth and final tour of duty—I’d later learn.…

ren introduce their parents to the class, and then the parents talk about their job. One of my classmates brought his mother who was with the US Military as a Marine soldier, apparently I was the only one amazed by the fact. I was pretty impressed with it and for several days kept playing with my brother's old toy copies of Automat Kalashnikov and shotguns. I kept striking random stuff at home and expectedly breaking them, so my weaponry was taken away. With the days I stopped searching for them and moved on, completely forgetting about my current dream to become a Marine Soldier.…

I live my life on a legacy of war survivors. My family's standards toward success have always been a key factor as I was being raised. As a young musician, my grandfather’s optimistic views deteriorated the moment he got drafted for World War II.Appointed as commander in the tanks divison, my grandfather felt his everlasting ego grow as he protected his country. The moment of victory however soon vanished when an oncoming tank shot down my grandfather’s tank, destroying everything in sight. He was able to escape from the commander’s hatch, but as he struggled to get his best-friend out of the tank, the tank exploded.…

First of all, I want to thank you for the phone call and leaving a voicemail. Taking the time out to help a Veteran was something I always wondered about this place. I always ask the question, is this a place for individuals to come every day for work as a lessee/lessor relationship, or does this place really have some sort of substance behind it for Veterans? Well, now I know that in fact it is a place for helping Veterans after all- when you called and thanks!!…

I identify as a Vietnamese-American, however, this was never the case. It was almost ironic how strongly I identified with American culture when my family’s time spent in America was fairly new. Since my parents traveled to America after the Vietnam War in the 1980’s, my siblings and I are the first American-born generation. I grew up as an American, so I quickly found out that I had no knowledge of the Vietnamese culture, language, or history. It came to the point where I realized, I couldn’t truly know myself before I knew where I came from.…
