The reader knows the narrator feels this way because in the story it says: “I contemplated suicide, wondered if i’d need bridgework, scraped the recesses of my brain for some sort of excuses to give my parents-a tree had fallen on the car, I was blinded by a bread truck, hit and run, vandals had got to it while we were playing chess at Digby’s”(Page 172, 6th paragraph). Up until this point the only concern we see from the boys was when they were caught. This shows the reader that the narrator isn’t as bad as he want’s/ says to be. At the end of the story the boys are getting into the car when they are asked to go party, to my surprise they turned the offer down. On page 174, 1st paragraph,” Finally she held out a handful of tablets in glassine wrappers and asked: “Hey you want to party, you want to do somethings with me and Sarah?””. This shows the reader that the boys have changed from trying be bad boys and caring what people think, to heading down the road to becoming a better person. Although this is true I do not sympathize for the mistakes the three boys have made even though the story shows that they might be changing for the better. In the story they almost kill a man, even if they didn’t, they went so far that the three of them were convinced
