Characterization is important to the short story, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” because of the fact that the grandmother is unnamed throughout the story. The author characterizes her as a very arrogant person who views herself superior to others because she is a “lady”. Since she considers herself a “lady” and is arrogant, she frequently passes judgement on other individuals. For example, when she says she’d never bring her children in the same direction of The Misfit and when she criticizes the children’s mother because they have not traveled to many different places. The grandmother’s appearance is very important to her characterization because it dresses her in a carefully selected dress and hat, that is most important to being considered
