Of the two, realism is a more effective tool to convey the atrocities of Stalin’s regime. Solzhenitsyn, uses common human needs, to convey a larger image of survival, emphasizing realism. The prisoners, barely receive what we consider basic human rights. Solzhenitsyn also uses the actions of the guards, to invoke empathy in the audience, who watches as prisoners are beaten and insulted. This shows the true seriousness that the gulag camps were. In Animal Farm, such things were satirized and cartooned, thus diverting attention from the direness of the situation.
