RESTORATION PERIOD
The restoration period which is considered to have started from 1660 and as the name itself suggests that it is called the restoration period due to the reason that Charles the second ascended the throne and monarchy was restored. The restoration period came after the puritan age which was supposedly of 18 years (1642-1660), people were deprived of many pleasures including entertainment which was the closing of theaters in that age. People were restricted from enjoying many simple pleasures thus the restoration period noticed the outburst of people towards the rules and regulations. The writings of the restoration period also reflect the social lifestyle and the mindset and thinking of the people belonging to the restoration period.
The restoration period and its writings changed many stereotypes and orthodox thinkings of the society. To begin with the restoration theaters saw the emergence of women in theaters and plays for the first time thus breaking the stereotype that only men could perform on stage, as earlier young boys having shrill voices would perform the parts of ladies in the play but from there on women were introduced in theaters and thus they became a part of the play. He was a great dramatis as he did not wrote a few lines which could make the audience laugh rather wrote them with a meaning, meaning which is very deep but still laughable. Considered to be one of his masterpiece THE WAY OF THE WORLD was first staged in London in 1700. THE WAY OF THE WORLD which was also based on comedy of manners carries the characteristics of comedy of manners very well, it has everything in it from the satires on the fashionable aristocratic society to witty dialogues to the malicious people and people being shown as immoral to the women being showcased as bold and emancipated and man being humorous and witty and to round it off the plot construction, comic situations and narration are just at the top. Thus this play never appeals to the emotions of the readers rather it appeals to the intelligence of the
