Two villains are exactly like Montresor which are the Joker, the villain from Batman and Cruella Deville, the villain from 101 Dalmatians. The Joker has many things in common with Montresor. The Joker and Montresor both have the same sort of horrifying inner dialogue. Montresor said in the short story” Yes’ I said. ‘let us be gone.’” This is considered to be Fortunato stating that Montresor should unshackle him and they should leave. Instead, Montresor changes the meaning by saying I will leave and you will die making it that they both will be gone in a short period. The Joker also has reputation for being very witty and clever about things. Montresor also has all these characteristics. Cruella Deville has the same characteristics as Montresor. In order to live a successful and happy life, both "The Odyssey" and "The Cask of Amontillado" show that perseverance is the most important quality to have, because struggles yield good results and goals are reached. Some may believe that perseverance does not lead to happiness and success, however, struggles yield good results. In "The Odyssey", Odysseus shows great perseverance despite the troubles he faces, such as "the Cyclops" (306), "the Lord Helios" (922), "the suitors mad with fear" (1290), and many more. Odysseus had multiple obstacles throughout his journey that could have hindered his success. He was able to fight through every battle that came his way, and return to his home in Ithaca.…

Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Cask of Amontillado” illustrates the wrong-doing of the character Montresor upon his friend, Fortunato, after what seems like a difference in opinions. Readers may wonder what drove Montresor to act as harshly as he did, but the reason may lie in the psychological dysfunctions imposed on his character. Montresor’s narcissistic, antisocial, and psychopathic ways led him to commit an act of murder upon Fortunato. A Narcissistic Personality Disorder is reflected through the character of Montresor.…

He says, “It must be understood that neither word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will… and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation” (Poe 1). Montresor says that he was smiling at the thought of Fortunato’s immolation. He is happy and excited at the thought of hurting and getting rid of Fortunato. This is the first instance in the story where you really get the feel that Montresor has ill wishes for Fortunato and wants to hurt him.…

rough the characterization of Montresor and Fortunato, Edgar Allen Poe’s “A Cask of Amontillado” suggests that a hubris leads to physical and cognitive collapse. The beginning of Montresor’s arrogance is easily showcased with the use of indirect characterization through his thoughts in the first few sentences of the short story. In his eyes, his bloodline or his family’s name is of paramount importance and anyone who disagrees is considered disrespectful. This can be shown in the text when it states “When Fortunato ventured upon insult, Montresor vowed revenge (Poe 1).”…

Montresor does not consider himself a despicable man as he notes “You, who so well know the nature of my soul” (Poe, para. 1). However, because his patience has already run thin he can’t bear the abuse anymore. The following lines illustrate this idea, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (Poe, para. 1). It seems to me that Montresor is a good man who has been enduring the abuse of Fortunato for an extensive time. After reaching his limit, Montresor believes that he is entitled to carry out revenge without facing punishment since he has the worthy purpose of restoring fairness.…
