23 May, 2016 The early twentieth century was without a doubt revolutionary. Everything from new technology to new ideals. Those new ideals were created by people such as Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini. However, the ideals that they had created were ones that hurt democratic ideals. Normally, most people prefer to have those democratic ideals that they were losing at that time. Yet those leaders managed to create those ideals by taking advantage of the situations that were going on in their own countries at that time, and the emotions that the countries citizens had during those situations. Right after the first world war, Germany was in an incredibly bad state. The Treaty of Versailles caused the German economy to suffer, and in turn the German people suffered. Many young people were unemployed. Everyone was dissatisfied with the way things were and wanted change. Hitler decided to take advantage of the people 's emotions to rise to power. Hitler talks about how he controlled the emotions of people in his book Mein Kampf. "The art of propaganda lies in understanding the emotional ideas of the great masses and finding, through a psychologically correct form, the way to the attention and thence to the heart of the broad masses."(Document A) Hitler himself admits that he controlled the people through many different forms of propaganda. One very well known way in which he controlled people was through uniting the young people in Germany. "Hitler made insignificant, poverty stricken, jobless youths of the slums feel himself one of the great of the earth, since the youth was a German. Hitler told the young men that the fate of Germany was in their hands...He put them into uniforms, he taught them to march, and sing together, he aroused that sense of comradeship and esprit de corps so precious to the young."(Document G). The fascist movement in Italy was started by a leader named Benito Mussolini. Fascism, which evolved from nationalism into something far more harmful. Unlike nationalism, where someone is just proud of their country, fascism has people take pride in their country and hate other nations. Fascist also are incredibly loyal to the state. "Fascism denies, in democracy, the absurd conventional untruth of political equality."(Document E). Not surprisingly, fascists did not believe that all people were created equal, an incredibly important democratic ideal. The citizens also had to swear to be loyal to the state, and to help the common good of the country. During the twentieth century, many totalitarian leaders were able to push their agendas by using propaganda to control people 's emotions. Each and every one of them used different tactics in order control the people. For example, Hitler controlled the young people in Germany by helping them feel as if they were part of something huge. Another is how Stalin mentions how the USSR was going to surpass the capitalist countries as soon as it became industrialized. What these leaders show, is that if the emotions of the people of the country are controlled by propaganda, that leader can do
