Team approach and legitimate authority were considered as two other important characteristics for success of leadership in rural area. As rural community has always been closely knitted, team approach is at the centre of their core learning from childhood. Hence, rural leaders if they continue with this approach, many rural people will thrive on this team environment. Authority should be distributed to the appropriate people, as this is one more trait which has been inculcated in rural communities since early developmental stages. Approaches based on authoritative and team working bases work better as compared to evidence based and science based knowledge in a rural setting was the opinion of six leaders in the interview.
Know your game, know your tools and know your team. In the rural areas, the game is different. The hospital is often viewed as their own by the community. Although, the leader may be able to make the changes, it is the community that has to accept the changes, and hence it is very important to know the game. The rules of the game are very different in rural as compared to the urban areas. The role of the captain may be limited to the team members only; the captain needs to understand the limitations of his power. In the rural area, as a new leader, it was important to find like-minded people from the team or even the entire community. Like-minded people formed a team within a team. Each person had his own little circle and when all like-minded people got together, the circle widened quickly and then change was easy to manage. In the metro areas, although the concept of like mindedness could work, but people were more focussed on goals, whereas in rural area, the focus was more on the method to achieve the goal, where like mindedness was perceived as an important
