In the book The Alchemist the main character Santiago has negative and positive traits which are shown in the book. The character Santiago has many positive traits, they are taking charge of situations, ingenuitive, and being open minded to new ideas. But Santiago also has some negative traits, some of them are being irrational, gullible and being easily attached to things. All of these traits help shape the events in The Alchemist and shows what type of character Santiago is. Each one of these traits are demonstrated by Santiago's actions, thoughts and words.
One of the positive traits of Santiago is taking charge of situations he does this many times and shapes the events in The Alchemist by doing this. In the book Santiago says “I’d like to build a display case for the crystals”( ) and then the crystal merchant says “people will pass by and bump into it, and pieces will be broken” then Santiago took charge by saying “Well, when I took my sheep through the fields some of them might have died if we had come upon a snake. In The Alchemist one of the quotes that supports the trait ingenous in Santiago is “Let’s sell tea to the people who climb the hill” then the Crystal merchant replied “Lot’s of places sell tea around here” then Santiago response is “But we could sell tea in crystal glasses.”( The Alchemist pg.30). This last quote shows a very ingenuity idea and device which Santago comes up with. This shows the boy’s ingenious by his smart thinking of selling drinks in the crystal cups which makes more profit for the store, because more people like drinking out of the crystal cups, “the guest would be impressed by the beautiful glassware” (The Alchemist pg 32) as said in the quote.
