Characteristics Of Pride In Pride And Prejudice

Throughout the novel Pride and Prejudice characters show their true characteristics; maybe not all at once, but readers gain an understanding of prideful and prejudiced characters. Jane for instance demonstrates pride whereas Lady Catherine de Bourgh show complete prejudice throughout the entirety of the novel, then the character Elizabeth balances pride and prejudice at the same time. Pride is defined as: A sense of one’s proper dignity or value; pleasure or satisfaction taken in achievement, possession or association; arrogance or conceit; the best of a group or class; and lastly a group of lions. When arrogance and conceit become the root of pridefulness, then having pride in a person or object becomes overbearing and people no longer care and become numb to personal achievements. A good time to express pride comes from showing self worth and not allowing people to take advantage of relationships or your person. Jane Bennet, the eldest sister of the Bennet family and the most stunning, exemplifies Pride throughout the entirety of the novel. Jane “never sees a fault in anyone” (4). Jane always looks for the best in people and avoids judgment. Pride is not necessarily bad in small amounts and prejudice is not either, which is why everyone loves Elizabeth 's character.
