Social Medi A Narrative Analysis

Great Essays
In the modern day world, technology and participating in social media has become part of society’s everyday life. For example, if one forgets to bring a camera or map when travelling, it is no longer an issue because a phone’s camera and Google Maps can be used. The same can be said for computers when travelling for a business trip. However, this convenience has slowly turned into an addiction when that said piece of technology has to be brought along everywhere with its user regardless of the inconveniences that may occur along the way. There has been research that has shown that more people own a mobile phone than a toothbrush. (Turner, 2015) These addictions are not to be taken lightly because they have shown to produce the similar kind …show more content…

On the other hand, flow is said to be getting the right feeling between tasks that are complicated to solve and those that are just uninteresting to engage with. (Kerr, Kücklich, & Brereton, 2006) Narrative is also an important part in new media where the narration of the characters in video games are part of the story that will draw the audience in. The narration in a game is a medium of storytelling that has one hurdle to overcome, interactivity. “Video games are the medium with the most untapped potential when it comes to storytelling.” (Parker, 2009) Unlike traditional media, where the creator can choose the content to be presented to the viewer, video game developers have to constantly think about how the players will react to a certain aspect of the game like the storyline or how the character is portrayed. Lastly, is intertextuality in new media. Intertextuality is the appreciation of TV shows, films, novels and more. It also exists in new media however, it is not as pleasure centred. Living in the digital age where information can be accessed easily, society are slowly educating themselves. They are becoming more aware of global issues, becoming more culturally sensitive and learn that there is more to what is only the tip of the iceberg. New media is changing the way society think and behave. As human beings, it is natural to think only of oneself, but because of how fast news spread and trends start, information about diseases, natural disasters and even wars are spread along with it. Take the ASL Ice Bucket Challenge for instance. The challenge is either to donate $100 to charity or thrown a bucket of ice water on themselves. (Roesler, 2014) Although, people only wanted to watch their friends squirm under the cold water, the campaign managed to raise a lot of awareness. They are slowly manipulated into spreading the challenge without even realising that it is changing the way they think and behave. The idea of the challenge is so fun, they just jump onto the bandwagon to join the rest. Of course not many took the initiative to learn more about ASL but it did raise concerns about the disease and the issues that they face. New media is changing the way society think and behave without even them knowing

In a traditionally constructed videogame story, the player receives some exposition of a conflict and then takes control of a likeable and well-understood character they will be able to identify with. Dialogue, non-interactive sequences (referred to in the gaming industry as “cutscenes”), and character development drive the story, allowing the actual gameplay to be isolated to make it easier for developers to create a game that is not only compelling story-wise, but also fun to play. Details, exposition, and likeable characters draw players in so they feel investment in the fictional world of the game, allowing the player to forget their own world. Tension and suspense derived from the player’s investment in the game world then lead to a climactic…

Video games are arguably even less associated with storytelling than comics are, with some critics believing “that the video-game form is incompatible with traditional concepts of narrative” (Bissel, 93). Where the medium truly excels, however, is with its capacity for immersion. Like how the addition of sound allowed filmgoers to not just watch the action but hear it, “Every new medium that has been invented … has increased the transporting power of narrative” (Rose, 36). Where readers of books and viewers of movies are passive, gamers take an active role in their narratives. In games like Mass Effect this means making key decisions that affect the development of the plot, but in games like Naughty Dog’s Uncharted and The Last of Us, this…

The most common character within a video game is the background character. Although background characters might not be overly important when creating narrative focuses or moving the game’s plot along, good background characters help to populate the video game’s narrative world. Having good background characters can mean the difference between having a believable narrative or one that falls flat. The game’s avatar cannot support the whole game world on their own and background characters take much of the narrative weight by performing needed roles sometimes as small as filling space. The background characters within visual novels are extremely important for many of the same reasons.…

With the recent jump in the world of social media, campaigns are making more progress than ever before, however, is the publicity actually being used to exhibit a positive message, or is it simply being used to create one time fads? Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist, once said, “What is interesting is the power and the impact of social media... So we must try to use social media in a good way.” Campaigns, like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, have attempted “to use social media in a good way”, but sometimes, their efforts are deficient in spreading awareness of their intended mission, but efficient in spreading excitement about the fad. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was started in the summer of 2014 by an activist group attempting to raise money for the research of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig 's disease).…
