Different Female Characteristics Resulting in Similar Endings (EDIT)
Fate has a way of working itself into people’s lives. In this case, both Murasaki and Dai-Yu’s futures end in a similar fashion despite having different characteristics. Murasaki from Tale of Genji was a character brought up as a lady, having been taught to be trustful and elegant by Genji, the man who “adopted” her. However, Dai-Yu grew up being proud and cautious of her surroundings, always looking out for herself until she meets Bao-yu. Although both female characters have different upbringings and personalities, their fates end in an ironic way with those same attributes pushing their loved one away.

She was trustful and honest but this was finally getting to her. Knowing Genji was committing lustful wrongdoings, she began to grow insecure and jealous. “They did seem such a remarkably well-matched pair. The rumor presently reached Murasaki, who at first told herself that he would not dream of keeping such a secret from her. Then, watching him closely, she could not dismiss the evidences which she found of restlessness,” (Murasaki, Chapter 15). Her suspicions were taking over and she began to feel concerned and worried over it. One of them being replacement: she became anxious, thinking that Genji would one day choose someone better or prettier. These thoughts cause her to recluse and consider becoming a nun to avoid her reality. But Genji turns her decision away, making her resent the situation, but never Genji because of her loyalty for him. This is what Genji expects from Murasaki despite his affair with another woman. All of these thoughts and worries over the matter began to take a toll on her; she was becoming depressed, pessimistic and doubting every little thing when it came to Genji’s whereabouts.
