The Virginia Company of London established Jamestown in Virginia, on 14th May, 1607. It became the first permanent settlement of British colonialists in North America although the settlers faced severe challenges. Only 60 of the initial 214 settlers were still alive after eight months, among them, Captain John Smith, who was an explorer and adventurer. With his firm leadership, he kept the settlement going despite the hardships for the first two years. Jamestown grew with 500 new settlers from England. However, more challenges came after his departure in 1609.
