Influencing politics seem like something easy, but in reality the most simple things come with the most complexities. During the 2004 and 2008 elections the American public showed a strong interest in particular issues that they found to be important because outside sources influenced them to demand to hear about. Issues like 2004’s plead for new foreign policy or 2008’s economical standing are perfect examples of how public opinion was and will continue to be in the control of many sources. Manipulating public opinions can come about in many ways, but only three will be discussed: influencing public opinion through circumstance, media, and symbolism. The media seems to be one of the most important forms of collecting information, information that sometimes might not always be true. Going back to the election of 2004, television was still reasonably new with it only being about a generation old since the 1960’s presidential election (when it was firstly used in politics). With that given amount of time from 1960 to 2004 the announcers had time to become like a second family to the to their audience (a face they can identify with). When 9/11 happened the media sources went crazy, they wanted the public to hear the cries of the victims and listen to their stories. The media does a great job of making you feel as if you are a part of something without you physically being there. So when the Election of 2004 came around, once again the emotion of 9/11 were relived through the media, to remind the audience that they should share some interest in foreign policy and that they cannot let it go …show more content…
But with these three forms of influencing public opinion, we can understand that it’s not only what people do, but also the conditions they are placed into by their environment. It is understood that if you want to maximize influence outcome you have to maximize your audience through the use of television or other forms of media. And it might also have to do with the small details that make or break how you want to guild positive public opinion in your direction.
